I got a new iMac recently and I’ve had about a month using it. I’m a long time Linux Desktop user and I finally decided to try something new. So far so good, but there are 2 things i’ve found thus far that I just don’t like.
- Finder – Finder is horrible. It’s too simplified and unstable. It lacks dual pane capability and it’s just plain broken when trying to use samba, nfs or afs network shares. It locks up completely when trying to administer files on these shares. The problem reports are well documented and abundant but Apple has yet to officially acknowledge or fix the problem. I finally had to switch to mucommander, it works perfectly.
- Time machine – Time machine is too simple. It seems to work ok, but there are no options to make it better. No way to easily change when and how often the backups occur and no real way to add network share folders to the list of updates. Good thing Cron is available as I was able to set up a cronjob for rsync to make backups work like I want.
Thus far, those are my only real complaints. I will provide updates later if I find anything else or if these 2 items eventually change or get fixed.
